Chocolate Sauce 101, Pt. 1

Chocolate sauce is typically made of dairy, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. It can be served on top of ice cream or pretty much over any dessert.  It is very simple to make at home; with ingredients already in the cupboard, you can make a batch in about 5 minutes.

Basic Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 5 ounces cocoa powder
  • 6 ounces maple syrup
  • 3 ounces milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened

Directions:

Combine milk, maple syrup, cocoa powder, and salt together in a saucepan over medium-low heat; whisk constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer.

Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and butter.
Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until serving. Store sauce in your refrigerator for up to one month.

Intrigue's Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients:

  •     8 ounces Intrigue Cocoa Mix (any flavor)
  •     1 tablespoon maple syrup
  •     3 ounces milk
  •     1 tablespoon butter, softened

Directions:

  • Combine milk, maple syrup, and cocoa mix together in a small saucepan over med-low heat; whisk constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer.
  • Remove from heat and stir in butter.
  • Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until serving. Store the syrup in your refrigerator for up to one month.

Pro-tips:

  • Use a high quality cocoa powder. We use lightly Dutch-processed cocoa powder in our mixes for a deep and rich chocolate flavor without sacrificing intensity.
  • Order a tube of Intrigue’s Cocoa Mix for that extra special touch. They add extra flavor and love to your sauce. Below are two basic recipes (with and without our mixes) for your convenience.
  • We replaced white sugar with maple syrup in these recipes for some extra flavor. Honey and agave syrup are also delicious substitutions.
  • Too thin? Add small amounts of cocoa until desired consistency is achieved.
  • Too thick? Add very small amounts of dairy until desired consistency is achieved.  A little water goes a long way!
  • Follow the recipe the first time, then adjust the sweetness to your desired level!
  • Don’t forget that a tiny bit of salt helps to balance the flavor profile.
