Chocolate Syrup 101, pt. 2

Chocolate syrup 101
Chocolate syrup is typically made of water, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. It can be served on top of ice cream, used to make a mocha, or mixed with dairy for the classic chocolate milk or milkshake. It is very easy to make chocolate syrup at home and you probably already have all the ingredients in your kitchen; you can whip up a batch in about 5 minutes.

Pro-tips:

  • Use a high quality cocoa powder. We use lightly Dutch-processed cocoa powder in our mixes for a deep and rich chocolate flavor.
  • Order a tube of Intrigue’s Cocoa Mix for that extra special touch. They add extra flavor and love to your sauce. Below are two basic recipes (with and without our mixes) for your convenience.
  • Not thick enough? Add small amounts of cocoa until desired consistency is achieved.
  • Too thick? Add very small amounts of water until desired consistency is achieved.  A little water goes a long way!

Basic Chocolate Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 ounces cocoa powder (1 cup)
  • 7 ounces brown sugar (1 cup)
  • 6 ounces water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. Combine water, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt together in a saucepan over med-low heat; whisk constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.  Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until serving. Store the syrup in your refrigerator for up to one month.

Intrigue's Chocolate Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 8.4 ounces cocoa mix (any flavor)
  • 0.4 ounces brown sugar (1 tablespoon)
  • 6 ounces water

Directions:

  1. Combine water, brown sugar, and Intrigue cocoa mix together in a small saucepan over med-low heat; whisk constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer.
  2. Remove from heat.   Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until serving. Store the syrup in your refrigerator for up to one month.
